Strasbourg opens like a summer meadow: floral, bright, and clean. This isn't the barnyard hay of Thor's Hammer, but something gentler. Think lemon grass and wildflowers scattered across a field warmed by the sun. If you're looking for a floral-citrus blend that favours balance over boldness, Strasbourg is worth the pinch.
Out of the tin, you're met with a medley of floral and citrus notes carried on a grassy undertone, over a light brown snuff speckled with tan and white bits. The floral is soft: some have called it violet, but I'd place it closer to a sweetened blend of meadow flowers. Light, fresh, and unperfumed. In the nose, the citrus notes are more pronounced: lemon and grapefruit zest, without the bitterness that often accompanies them. Instead, it finishes like citrus kissed with sugar water, refreshing and delicate. There's no bergamot to speak of, which helps the blend stay clean rather than veering into cologne territory. The grind is medium-fine, keeping with most English-style snuffs, as I find they float between fine and medium-fine, and it's easy to pinch in small doses; with Strasbourg, smaller pinches are the way to go. The moisture content is comparable to that of most English-style snuffs, though this one leans slightly to the drier side. I'm sampling it from a smaller tap tin, so it may be slightly drier than a properly stored snuff tin, and with the tap tin it's hard to tell if clumps form. It contains a light to moderate amount of vitamin N, and is easy to use all day without drip issues. The moderate grind and floral notes can take an experienced snuffer to appreciate, so I'd call this an intermediate snuff. While I find it a bit too gentle for deep hits, it shines as a light, refreshing treat throughout the day.
It's a quiet pleasure, something to revisit when the sky is clear and the pace is slow.
